Tyler was a little disapointed when Jake was first born that he could not play with him. Now that Jake is bigger they have a great time and Tyler is happy. OH YEAH!!!!!And the first week we noticed a BIG difference. Samantha has always been difficult from day one (and we love her that much more for all of the sprit that she has, although it can be frustrating at times). Madison is easy, easy, EASY..the very opposite of big sister. I have always said that my girls are like cake (we all love cake) Well, Sam is the cake...Madison is the frosting..I love them both the same, just one is much easier than the other. Does that make any sense? LOL | 1 | 2% |
Our kids were different from the start. It is hard to explain specifics but there are lots of things about each one that I often feel are "hard wired" or just the way they were born. | 1 | 2% |
Tyler was a little more advetureous than Jake. But I think Jake will walk sooner and Jake is all personality. He LOVES to smile and flirt with people and when he is upset he as such a dramatic way of showing it. First he will look at you and frown with a huge dropped lip (tears are just on the surface of the eyes), then he will just fall to the ground and put his head down as he wimpers and cries. I am a strong Mom but I have fallen to this tactict more than once. Jake's grandparents, daycare teachers and aunt are completly defensless against this attack. It is priceless.

We call this our "restaurant theory of religions". We don't see why you're supposed to have just one religion. If you're going out to dinner, you can eat Chinese food one day, American the next, and Ethiopian food the day after that. We think it'll be neat to do the same thing with religions: take the best from many different religions and find what works best for you. We intend to raise our baby that way. | 1 | 2% |

We started out seeing a regular obstetrician. She was wonderful! But she has 10 partners, any of whom might be present when your baby is born. Some of them work more days than others, with the result that there was about a 1 in 6 chance of my obstetrician actually being there when my baby was born. At the "ob tea" that her office holds so you can meet your obstetrician's partners, so that they're not all strangers to you when you arrive to give birth, I met about half of her partners. Most of them seemed nice enough, but one was really Scary. I knew I didn't even want him in the *room* with me when I was giving birth, let alone having him deliver my baby. Also, it was important to me to know the person who delivered the baby beforehand. So we switched to planning a home birth instead of a hospital birth. We continued seeing the obstetrician, as backup, but started seeing midwives who would deliver our baby at home. We chose the midwives who had delivered my obstetrician's youngest baby. They were great! | 1 | 2% |

I was tested a lot during pregnancy, but was pretty much always healthy. Oh, the one test I did have come back abnormal was the one on my thyroid. I have an underactive thyroid, so they tested my thyroid hormone levels regularly during pregnancy. The classes helped because we knew what to expect. I couldn't get baby's dad to read anything about birth, so the classes were great for telling him what birth would be like. Also, it was great to know what my body was doing. During labor, I used some of the relaxation exercises and body positions that had been covered in my class. It was nice to meet (in person instead of online) with other people going through pregnancy at the same time as me. Also, the classes helped me to know what to expect, so I approached labor more confidently than I otherwise would have.

Although they didn't actually help me it wasn't because the information wasn't useful. It was because I had a "sunnyside up" baby and after 18 hours of back labor and trying the methods in class I had a C-section after my temperature shot up to 102.5 deg F. We did try things mentioned in class, we just weren't able to progress. I think that in most cases the info is very useful. | 1 | 2% |

I liked my Bradley classes, but not my instructor. She usually (maybe 5 out of 8 evenings) forgot to bring important things that she needed for the class, such as the video that we were going to watch that evening. Also, I disliked the way Bradley claims that you have to do entirely Bradley in order to have a successful birth. I would have prefered a more multi-method approach, where the teacher covers the best of lots of methods.
I took Bradley because I thought the Lamaze-style breathing techniques sounded like something I would find very silly, and also because Lamaze specializes in distraction from what your body is doing, while Bradley specializes in focusing on what your body is doing. I know I like to be aware of what's going on around me, and I knew I would want to be focused on what my body was doing, so Bradley sounded much better to me than Lamaze. | 1 | 2% |

For maybe the first six months of pregnancy I was completely junk-food-free. After that I switched to allowing myself one serving of junk food per week. By "junk" I mean something with some amount of nutritional value, such as ice cream; I didn't eat anything along the lines of candy or gummi bears. I started with prescription prenatal vitamins, but didn't like them for a variety of reasons, including: they made me feel less healthy, they included chemicals such as polyethylene glycol that I didn't want to be eating, they included more vitamin A than the recommendations say is safe (can you believe that?!), and they only included a few vitamins while my old multivitamins had included a zillion different vitamins and minerals. After a bunch of reading, I switched back to my regular old multivitamins. I did a lot of stressing out about prenatal vitamins, since most of what's on the market really doesn't come close to what I wanted in a prenatal multi. Something that had enough of one thing didn't have enough of another and had a dangerously high amount of a third thing, and another brand seemed pretty good but required you to take 6 pills a day, and a third brand cost $100 for a month's supply. Sigh.
Eventually I found a good brand of prenatal multivitamins that I liked a lot, so I switched to that instead. I don't remember the brand off the top of my head, but it comes in a green and yellow bottle. | 1 | 2% |

After a week of latent labor, I had my midwife break my water and then start pitocin. | 1 | 2% |
At 37 weeks gestation (dated by LMP, 34/5 by conception), they induced because of PIH. First they used Cervadol (SP?) to ripen the cervix. That made the baby's heartbeat plummet. After pulling out the insert and waiting a couple of hours to make sure that he had recovered, they began a pitocin drip. That ran through the IV until his birth, nearly 24 hours later. I was not at all ready physically, but even so, the labor wasn't THAT bad. I am glad that they induced -- it likely saved both the baby and me, as the placenta had started to tear away from the uterine wall. | 1 | 2% |
At my 41 week check there was poor fetal movement, I failed the BPP so induction was recommended. It was fast (less than an hour from start to hard labor) and hard. I started at 3 cm and after 5 hours I was only 4-5 but right after my epidural I was fully dilated and pushed my son out half an hour later! | 1 | 2% |

I wasn't sure what to write for this question. My midwives are lay midwives, which means that technically they are not medical. But I think they count for the purposes of this question. I counted the two midwives and their one apprentice all as medical people. They also doubled as doulas, especially the apprentice. But I didn't think I should double-count anybody, so I wrote that no doulas were present.
I wasn't sure what to put for questions like, "who delivered the baby's shoulder", since I'm not sure exactly what my midwives were doing at the time the shoulder was born. I'm guessing they were more hands-on for the head and body, and less so for the shoulders. But I checked "midwife" for pretty much everything, except cutting the cord, which baby's daddy did. | 1 | 2% |

Of course there were those who didn't like the names I chose, but who cares. I told them to watch out when they had kids. | 1 | 2% |
They made a few funny noises when we announced the baby's name, but we deliberately waited until after the baby was born in the hopes that we could forestall objections. This strategy worked.
Oh, by the way, I checked that we picked the name in second trimester, but in fact we picked the baby's first name and his second middle name and his last name then, but we picked his first middle name in the hours after he was born. We had narrowed it down to two choices for the first middle name, but then we kept going back and forth between them and "definitely" deciding on one or the other and then changing our minds again. I leaned toward one name and my partner leaned toward the other. My choice prevailed because my partner figured that after all the pain I'd gone through to birth that baby, he was going to let me choose this. I think that's sweet but not very fair, and if I'd found this out then instead of months later, I might have objected. | 1 | 2% |

Sore nipples, sleepy baby. I had a hard time waking the baby to eat. I had a hard time getting the baby to latch on, so that I was willing to accept any successful latch-on, even if it was painful. The baby was taking bottles fine, and then one evening when I was out, he took his first bottle fine but then later in the evening he couldn't figure out how to drink from a second bottle. He couldn't handle bottles for months after that. Even now, at 11 months old, he can't get much out of a bottle. He doesn't eat much by way of solids, either, so he basically gets all his nutrition from nursing from a breast. I wish he would take bottles better, or start eating solids, or something. I used an Avent Isis. It was fine at first, but I ran into some odd problems later on, where my milk would lubricate my breasts, causing slippage against the pump, which caused me not to get much milk out. I've solved that problem now, by drying my breasts at intervals while pumping, and it's possible that this would be a problem with any type of pump. But for my next baby I want to get a Medela Pump In Style. HEB brand diapers are the absolute best! I've never ever had one spring a leak, and they are very inexpensive and have velcro. | 1 | 2% |
Huggies are great and keep them very dry. They also contained some major blowouts. | 1 | 2% |
Huggies have a funny smell! | 1 | 2% |
I like Pampers the best, by far. | 1 | 2% |
I prefer Von's store brand over huggies or pampers. They are cloth like and have velcro snaps but are aprox $3-4 less than name brand. They also have cute muppet babies on band. | 1 | 2% |
I really like Huggies as well, I like the kind with "velcro" tabs | 1 | 2% |
They are better than the most expensive ones I have tried and very economical. | 1 | 2% |
We think Tender Care diapers catch poop better (fewer blowouts). Huggies are more absorbant. So we generally put a Tender Care diaper on the baby when we think he is going to poop, and Huggies the rest of the day. | 1 | 2% |
We use Huggie Supreme or Pampers Premium. Lynda reacts to any other brands. | 1 | 2% |

Jake did very well sleeping. He was in our bed for the first 4-6 weeks and then he was in his bassinet. He moved to his crib at about 4 months. | 1 | 2% |
She originally slept with us, then went to a bassinet beside the bed at 5 months, now in a crib in her own room at 8 months, but still comes to bed with us when she wants to | 1 | 2% |

Was only mixed up for a short while. | 1 | 2% |
We started out co-sleeping. That didn't work very well for us, as nobody was getting a lot of sleep. We experimented quite a bit with a crib, but the baby really hated his crib, so we gave up on that. We tried moving Dad downstairs to the guest room, but Mom missed him terribly. When the baby got to be mobile, baby took to crawling off the edge of the bed. So we babyproofed the heck out of his room and put a futon in there. The baby sleeps on the futon. Mom can nurse him right there and leave him to sleep, without moving him. If he wakes up, the room is a safe place for him to roam around. Mom often spends a large part of the night co-sleeping with the baby on the futon, but she can go back to her own bed too. It's a wonderful arrangement. | 1 | 2% |
We used a "family bed" approach for the first 6 months or so, and then moved to the crib. Days and nights were mixed up for a short time. | 1 | 2% |

I wonder if I'll ever fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes. Some were so baggy that I wore them right through pregnancy. Others are still too tight to wear. I guess this question is really about whether my body is back in the same configuration as it was in before pregnancy, and the answer is definitely No. I still have a big bulge. It was exciting when the bulge meant that I was 4 months pregnant. But now that I'm not pregnant and I still have a four-months bulge, it's not so exciting anymore. Sigh. | 1 | 2% |
